Assessment criteria for OCR Communication in Business stage 1

SECTION 1 - ORAL COMMUNICATION

This section of the syllabus assesses candidates' abilities to communicate effectively in a range of oral situations and to plan and deliver a presentation.

 

Assessment Objectives

Candidates should be able to

1.1 Receive and make business telephone calls

 

a)      Appropriate tone and style of address are adopted

b)      Appropriate vocabulary is used

c)      The purpose of the call is correctly identified

d)      Routine information is conveyed accurately

e)      Instructions are followed

 

1.2 Participate in one of a range of routine one to one work-related situations (e.g. greet a visitor, assist a visitor/other member of staff; participate in a work-related interview situation)

 

a)      Appropriate tone and style of address are adopted

b)      Appropriate vocabulary is used

c)      Routine pieces of information and/or messages are conveyed accurately

d)      Instructions are followed

 

1.3 Prepare materials and deliver a short presentation (4-5 minutes)

a)      A plan for the presentation is constructed

b)      Visual aids are prepared (e.g. OHTS, hand­outs)

c)      Materials are clearly presented using business vocabulary and style

d)      Suitable tone and style of address are used for the presentation

e)      Appropriate vocabulary is used

f)       Information is presented in a structured an business-like way


SECTION TWO - WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

This section of the syllabus assesses candidates' abilities to use standard forms of written business communications and to extract and present information accurately and in a reorganised format using appropriate and accurate English.

 

Assessment Objectives

Candidates should be able to:

2.1           Compose business documents', demonstrating a knowledge of accepted formats

(a)     Routine business letters, on a range of topics, are composed and presented

(b)     Work-related personal business letters, on a range of topics, are composed and presented (e.g. job applications)

(c)     Memoranda, on a range of topics, are composed and presented

(d)     Telephone and recorded telephone messages are composed and presented

(e)     Fax messages are composed and presented

(f)      E-mail messages are composed and presented

 

2.2                Identify relevant information

(a)     Information relevant to the given task is identified

 

2.3           Use/present/adapt information

(a)     Brief notes are prepared

(b)     Simple leaflets/advertisements/notices/ posters are drafted

(c)     Pre-printed forms are completed

 

2.4 Demonstrate an appreciation of the context

(a)     Appropriate tone and style of address are adopted in which business communications are composed

(b)     Appropriate vocabulary is used

(c)     The needs and expectations of the recipient are taken into account

 

2.5 Use English correctly

(a)     Common words are spelt accurately

(b) Basic punctuation is accurate and consistent

(c) Simple sentences are structured correctly

 

Form of Assessment

 

1.        Section One of the syllabus will be assessed by centres. The oral sections should be taped on audio/video cassette. The tape may be requested by OCR, together with copies of the presentation material, for sample moderation. This component of the examination carries 25% of the marks available.

2.        Section Two of the syllabus will be assessed by a 2hour examination. The examination carries 75% of the marks available for the assessment.

2.1   The marks available for each question will be stated on the question paper. Each of the individual components of layout, content, presentation and use of English will be assessed in all questions.

2.2   Candidates may use either open or closed punctuation in their responses as long as the style chosen is used consistently throughout the task.

 

Results and Certification

1.        Results will he graded Distinction, Credit, Pass or Fail

2.        Candidates will be required to pass both the oral and the written part of the examination.

2.1   In order to achieve a Pass, candidates will be required to achieve 50% of the marks available in both parts of the examination.

2.2   In order to achieve a Credit candidates will be required to achieve 65% of the marks available in both parts of the examination.

2.3   In order to achieve a Distinction, candidates will be required to achieve 75% of the marks available in both parts of the examination.
