Topic

1. Introduction to Public Speaking

Aim:    To introduce the purpose, content and structure of the course

Learning Outcomes - By the end of the session learners will have:

1.      An understanding of what they can expect to gain from the course and what they are expected to do

2.      An overview of the ways in which public speaking is used

3.      Thought about what makes communication in this manner effective

35 min - Course purpose and content

Describe the overall purpose of the course, the content of the four sessions, what is expected of learners and the way the course will be assessed

40 min – Uses of Public Speaking

Ask learners about their experiences of speaking in public and explore the different types of public speaking and technologies

Talk about their own experiences and discuss those of other members of the group

Projector – to display key points, use of standard software and illustrate use of technology

15 min - Summary & review

Summarise the results of the first session and introduce the topics for the next one

Assessment

The Course will be assessed by Tutor observation of the responses and interaction of learners. Learners will be given the opportunity to make a short presentation to the Tutor and other Learners during the course of the final session and contribute to the assessment of their own performance and that of others. Learners will also be asked to comment on the course content and presentation.

Aim:    To outline and describe the information required to begin preparing for all types of public speaking

Aim:    To outline and describe the practical activities that can be used to prepare for all types of public speaking

Learning Outcomes – By the end of the session learners will have:

8.      When and how they might use the various types of technology available to them

40 min – Workshop – delivering a short presentation

Encourage Learners to give a three minute presentation on the subject they wish or expect to deliver in public

Give  a 3 minute presentation to all present and listen to other presentations

40 min – Workshop - putting the speaking material together

Organise and support 3 workshop groups

Agree a topic and format for a group presentation and develop the material

Handout – giving key points about use of technology given at start of workshop session

Summarise the results of the session and the format for the Final Session

Group discussion on experiences gained from workshop sessions

Aim:    To provide an acceptable experience of public speaking for the beginner

Learning Outcomes – By the end of the session learners will have:

9.      An understanding of how they can begin to speak in public successfully

10.  The confidence, gained from sound preparation, to tackle public speaking in the future

Establish what learners gained from the previous sessions and encourage their comments and questions. Describe the current session plan

15 min – Workshop - Final preparations for Group Presentations

Encourage and support 2 groups plus individuals

Work together to complete preparations for Group Presentation. Individuals plan 3 minute presentation

1hr 10 min – Speaking in Public practical exercise

Ensure that Presentations keep to time (20 minutes/Group)

Present within Group or individually, observe other presentations and comment
