Sustainable Development in Staffordshire

The British Midlands was the heart of the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century. Shropshire had iron founding in Coalbrookdale. Birmingham became the workshop of the world. In Staffordshire (see map dated 1769, before industrialisation was apparent) coal was mined and canals constructed to enable goods to be distributed across the country and, as a result, pottery made around Stoke-on-Trent (in the north of the county) and developed through the experimentation of men such as Josiah Wedgwood could find international markets. It is therefore appropriate that people in this area should want to take the next step and seek to achieve sustainable development.
