Definition of key Concepts

 

A.     Sustainable development - meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (definition taken from ‘Our Common Future’ the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, published in 1987)

B.     Sustainable practices – include the specific application of generally recognised good management practices such as living on environmental income (i.e. taking from the environment only what the biosphere can replenish) and maintaining environmental capital in good order for the potential use of future generations (i.e. maintaining or improving the ‘carrying capacity’ of the planet)

C.     Applications of sustainable practices – it is generally recognised that the problems that need to be addressed by sustainable practices have economic, social and environment affects
