Cannock Chase

An area of outstanding natural beauty in Staffordshire

The hills and heaths of Cannock Chase stretch from close to the County Town of Stafford in the North to Cannock Town in the South and Rugeley in the East

The Earls of Lichfield established their seat at Shugborough at the northern end of the Chase close to where the river Sow joins the Trent. The House is now managed by the National Trust

The River Trent is joined by the Sow at the northern edge of Cannock Chase and then runs through the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust HQ at Wolseley Bridge

During the early years of the Industrialisation of Staffordshire canals from Stoke-on-Trent and Wolverhampton also met close to Shugborough but there main use today is for pleasure

Deer are one of the most popular local wildlife attractions on the Chase

The views from the higher parts are magnificent at all times of the year

Staffordshire County Council, The National Trust, Staffordshire Wildlife Trust and the ANOB Authority all combine to help manage the Chase

Despite its popularity for visitors, it retains a sense of the natural English countryside
