Do you believe in one God?

The fate of the world hangs on this question.  Christians, Jews and followers of Islam should answer 'Yes'.  If the question were altered to 'do you believe in one Creation' then Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and many others would also agree.  In whatever direction you look and how ever powerful the instruments you use, creation stretches away, unbroken and unending.  Thus, even those who do not perceive a divinity and rely totally on rational scientific exploration accept that this universe is a whole and complete entity.  However, the bigger question is 'do you understand the implications of this truth'?  This is necessary to ask because the actions of some are causing destruction that threatens all human life and that of many other creatures.

The problem is that each individual human is unique and, in many cases, feels separate.  When they identify with a group of surrounding individuals an even stronger sense of separation from others can develop.  Non-members of the group, who actually differ little from themselves, start to be seen as dangerous aliens who need to be controlled or even eliminated, much as we have sought to eliminate fellow inhabitants of this planet that are seen as a threat.  Thus, at the time of writing, members of the United Nations are looking for a reason to attack and 'change the regime' of another member of this club, whilst being involved in ongoing conflicts elsewhere.  The current justification is 'the war against terror' but the reality is that some people do not see others as being part of their world of ideas and beliefs.

Whatever the outcome of the current debate, the biosphere is already showing signs of damage and any conflict will cause more.  This matters to each individual because human animals are a part of the biosphere and we rely on its health to sustain human life.  But how does the Creator who loves and sustains all creation feel?  If this question really matters because you accept that the kingdom of God is all there is how will you respond?

Responses

1.      Jesus says 'Love each other as I have loved you' (John 15:12, NIV) and 'Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you' (Matthew 5:44, NIV). (Suggested by Paul Newman)

2.      In my view belief in God is reinforced by scripture but it is something inherent within you brought to fruition by the Holy Spirit. It is true to say that this does give a peace that the world cannot give. (John 14 v 16-18). Belief in God is not reliant on belief in The Bible, rather the converse; belief in The Bible comes from a belief in God. (Suggested by Ray Bunney)
